About the Build

Canterbury Cottage was designed by local architect Lee Rumora, AIA, who referenced work by famed British Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for inspiration in creating this beautiful English Country home.

The exterior of the 6,495 sq. ft. home is finished with stone, brick, and shake shingle. The windows are simulated divided lite grids, offering the historic look of individual panes of glass that make up the sash. Brick steps welcome visitors up to a front porch with custom mahogany doors.

The English country house interior features a foyer with hickory hardwood floors and a staircase with wrought iron balusters. Three open truss beams impose a grand structural impression on the two-story ceiling. To the right, the home’s study stands a full story and a half. It includes aged barn wood beams that further enhance the structural elements of the foyer. The dining room is framed by curved casing with backband (featured throughout the entire first floor) and a raised tray ceiling with crown molding.

Ten-foot ceilings throughout the home provide ample opportunities for ceiling treatments such as we find in the family room. Here, beams with crown molding support the roof in style. The radius top’s cased openings with backband mimic the theme from the dining room. Higher up, 10’ ceilings raise the header height for doors and windows to 8’ (instead of the more typical 6’8”). This additional 16” of glass welcomes much more natural light into the home.

The hickory hardwood floors lead into the kitchen, offering a seamless transition from room to room. Hand-hewn beams offer another luxurious ceiling treatment here. Brick replaces wood casing to invite guests into the pub room where knotty alder wood makes up the bar, wainscoting, and fireplace mantle and columns. Just off the pub room, guests can enjoy a screened-in porch with a stained tongue and groove ceiling.

The hickory flooring of the house’s interior continues into a luxurious master bedroom where a raised tray ceiling boasts one more value-adding ceiling treatment. The floor of the master bath transitions into a gray marble tile lovingly inset with lighter marble. His and her vanities, a large walk-in shower and a roomy soaking tub provide plenty of space to relax and freshen up.

Last but not least, we can’t forget to visit the lower level! Here, the home’s exercise room, pool table, large flatscreen TV, and walk-in wine cellar ensure years of entertainment and enjoyment for all.

Builder's Note

The 10’ ceilings in this English country house’s interior allowed for details like a coiffured ceiling in the family room, a raised tray ceiling with crown in the dining room, and hand-hewn beams in the kitchen. Even higher ceilings in the office facilitated our use of reclaimed barn beams. Finally, a two-story foyer provided us the necessary space to build open truss beams.
