The piece explores Cua's focus on two overarching aspects when it comes to the big picture of any given build:
(1) A style-based approach (as opposed to period-based) with features that are characteristic of that style.
(2) Matching the interior to that style-based exterior.
On the style vs. period distinction, Tom is quoted as saying, “If period-style architecture is done correctly, you really shouldn’t be able to tell when it was built. This offers the homeowner a more timeless home, one that we feel will hold a greater value.”
This, in a nutshell, is why establishing an architectural style (Craftsman, French country, etc.) is so preferable to merely shooting for an era ('80s, '90s, etc.).
